GIMLI GLIDER COCKPIT RESTORATION &

COMMEMORATIVE PARK INSTALLATION INITIATIVE

YOUR SUPPORT IS NEEDED!

Our community has an acknowledged “tourism attraction” bringing visitation from around the world to see the Gimli Glider Exhibit. The number of guests to the Exhibit, especially from other countries, has grown exponentially since the grand opening in 2017.

Travel Manitoba has often referred to the volunteer operated Exhibit as a “Must-Seeum Museum”. Reviews are constantly praising the high quality of the Exhibits visitor experience, the entertainment value, and the resulting discovery of Gimli’s overall town site attractions.

With help of a major donation, the famous Gimli Glider cockpit artefact, from which the famous landing in Gimli was made possible, was recently secured and acquired!

On July 1st 2025 the cockpit was accompanied by Captain Bob Pearson and R.M. of Gimli Reeve of the Day, Ray Sigurdson, in the Canada Day Parade. Public reaction and cheers of “thank you for bringing it back” were commonplace as the famous Gimli Glider artefact traveled through the town streets to its location for a “Shovel Groundbreaking Ceremony”

The plan is to have the historical cockpit placed on display permanently for public viewing year round through the development of a COMMEMORATIVE PARK that will be located near the entrance of the Gimli Motorsports Park that leads to the runway where the world famous

landing took place. Our ‘ask’ is to seek financial assistance for the restoration and installation of the cockpit within the development of the COMMEMORATIVE PARK, the proposed site having been approved and supported by the R.M. of Gimli.

Gimli’s rich aviation history that’s vastly contributed to the town’s current economic growth goes well beyond the Gimli Glider event. The COMMEMORATIVE PARK being established can potentially be further developed through additional phases to recognize this history. That is why your support is so important at this time in order to get this initiative completed as soon as possible; that being the restoration and installation of the Gimli Glider cockpit, thereby creating an exciting aviation attraction for visitors and the community to enjoy and reflect on.
